Dear MUIS,

I will be heading to Japan soon. My job is to taste various varieties of seafood in Japan: http://en.rocketnews24.com/2013/11/18/20-horrifyingly-tempting-seafood-specialities-from-japan/

Is it true that we can eat everything that comes from the sea?

Can you refer to the above website and tell me, can i eat them all? (Especially puffer fish, sea urchin, whales, dolphins, jelly fish, shishamo- pregnant fish , horse hair crabs?)

Answer:

Dear Miss Lina
The consumption of all marine animals, in any shape or form, is permissible (halal) according to the majority school of thought in Islam such as As-Syafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali mazhabs with the exceptional of Hanafi mazhab which only consider fish as halal.

In relation to this, we quote the Hadith narrated by Abu Hurayra about a man who came to the Messenger of Allah, and said: Messenger of Allah! We travel by sea and we do not carry fres water with us so if we perform wudhu with it we go thirsty. Can we perform wudhu with sea water? The Messenger of Allah replied, its water is pure, and its dead creatures are halal.

This general rule can be applied to all types of fish; however, it is encourage avoiding eating any type of fish which can cause harm to your health if not served properly due to the poson found in some of their organs.

Everything that can cause harm is forbidden as food, even if it comes from the sea, because Allah says: And do not throw yourselves into destruction [al-Baqarah 2:195].

And Allah Knows best
