Chicken Affair: Love at first SNIFF!

This is one of my favourite haunts. Whenever I come back from overseas trip, be it for pleasure or business (often pleasure *smiles), I will come down here. Love much. It’s located in Whampoa area where the gorgeous food are often found.

This stall was a “stumbled-upon” discovery. I was walking by in the early morning, one day, sniffing thru (that’s how I sieve thru the good n the awesome food) the early breakfast entries. And I saw this orangey-fried chicken from afar, of course it was the yummy scent that attracted me to it , first. It’s like LOVE at first sniff! *chuckles

Anyway, the fried chicken looked so good, I was automatically enchanted to order my first meal of the day. It was about 9am. That was years ago. Recently, I went back to check on them and to see whether the taste and quality is as good. I was amazed to see that the shop has actually expanded to 2 stalls. And OMG, look at the queue!! So this tiny little stall has gain much attention, huh? I was very happy for them!! *jumping in joy

And so I put my tongue to the test. The crispy fried chicken came hot and piping with fluffy chicken rice and of course, fried innards are a must! Especially chicken gizzards and livers.

The fried chicken came in generous heaps (as always) and was crispy on the outside, marinated to perfection with all the Malay spices. The flesh was juicy and tender. Even the breast part was a delight (I normally fancy only drumstick or leg area because I fear often, most hawkers over-fried the chicken breast meat thus resulted in the meat being too dry,…but the breast is good, as well!) And they have this tiny heaps of fried “floury” thingy like specs of snow generously showered upon the fried chicken. Some customers love them.

And I love the fried gizzards and liver, they were fried with garlic skins and coriander thus the fragrance. You can see pieces of them in between the innards. MMMM…. *breathing in a good dosage of the yummy scent.

The rice was hot and fluffy. The chilli sauce/dip is perfect for me. What I love is the additional black soya sauce in the chili sauce.(unique). The cucumbers slices and salad leaves served were fresh and crunchy (not bitter at all, some cucumber slices served in other places can turn me off when they are bitter, yikes!). The transparent chicken soup is ok.

I have to rate them 5 hearts in terms of taste and quality.It means: I’m in LOVE.
The quality and taste has always been tip top every time, I drop by.

This has got to be my number 1. Malay chicken Rice in Singapore for me. The secret to their bustling success is that they use fresh chickens every time (no wonder!)..

Ambience: It’s like in a hawker centre. Small, secluded, located in a coffee shop,

non-aircon but windy. Seats are limited especially on Saturdays.

I’m not particular about the place as long as the food is good. And I prefer to come during the early opening hours. So it’s all good for me.

Differences between Malay and Chinese Chicken rice are their signature dishes. The way they do their chickens varied too. For me, personally, Malay chicken rice has the best  fried chickens. And for Chinese chicken rice, their best are mostly steamed chickens and fried chicken rice (The Wok Hay-breath of life is truly amazing!)

In both cases , their chilli sauce/dip are similar but never the same. I love the Chinese chilli sauce which often has a dollops of raw garlic in them and fresh gingers…Do not belittle that pale-looking Chinese steam chicken, do you know that some had to be massaged well before they are cooked or steam to perfection? (food for thought)

Look at the crowd… early Saturday morning….

  1. It's no longer at the Lorong Limau coffeeshop. A few months back, a fire occurred and was allegedly caused by this stall. The coffeeshop has since re-opened but not Mat Noh chicken rice. If anyone has any idea where they have moved to, please share because my withdrawal symptoms are getting unbearable!
